Classes are open to ages 16 and up.

Course instructors are renowned in the arts community, locally, regionally, and across the US. Click the instructor’s name for information about his or her interests and experience.

Members enjoy reduced class fees; contact RHP for details about the benefits of studio membership. March, 2017: The Romero House Potters (RHP) closes the winter season with the March 2 – April 1 session. Students may register any time during the session.

 Monday

IMG_3199EDITPAPER CLAY SCULPTING
1:00 pm-4:00 pm   March 6, 13, 20, and 27

Instructor: George Peñaloza

fee: $140 (member) $160 (non-member)

Eccentric and talented artist-in-residence George Peñaloza will teach sculpting in paper clay (stronger and more forgiving than clay bodies without these fibers). Paper clay allows continuing to work beyond the leather hard stage. Students will use cone 10 commercial paper clay; Max’s is recommended. The course will cover hollow construction using clay slabs, and demonstrate how to achieve incredible detail using paper clay. Under glazes and acrylic paints as surface treatment will be addressed.

Tuesday

WHEEL, SCULPTURE, and HAND BUILDING   
9:30 am-12:30 pm   March 7, 14, 21 and 28 

Instructor: Janet Burner

fee: $140 (member); $160 
(non-member)

This class brings together students with varying degrees of experience in clay, who share a desire to be creative using hand building techniques and the potter’s wheel. Demonstrations will be given regularly. Individual artistic development is the class focus. High fire, low fire, saggar, and raku firings will be covered.

THROWING ON THE WHEEL
9:30 am – 12:30 pm   March 4, 11, and 25 and April 1

Note: There is no class meeting on March 18 due to the Artisans” Market. The fourth class meeting is scheduled for April 1.

Instructor: Jim Jones

Fee: $140 (member); $160 (non-member)

Build a strong foundation in working on a potter’s wheel. Bring your favorite cone 10 clay; Rod’s Bod clay suggested for beginners. Or use recycled clay, available for purchase at RHP. Surface treatments such as impressing, glazing and using oxides and stains will be discussed and demonstrated; firing and use of studio glazes is included.

SKILL LEVEL: All skill levels are welcome

SCULPTING IN CLAY: REALISM, SURREALISM AND BEYOND
1:30 pm – 4:30 pm   March 11, and 25 and April 1.

THIS CLASS MEETS ONLY THREE SATURDAYS THIS SESSION.  FEES HAVE BEEN ADJUSTED.

Note: There is no class meeting on March 4 and no class on March 18 due to the Artisans” Market. The third class this session is scheduled for April 1.

Instructor: Sid Henderson

Fee: $105 (member); $120  (non-member)

Students will gain an understanding of clay and its expressive possibilities through the exploration of their personal visions, whether they be realistic or dream-like. Large scale life-like figurative sculpture, as well as smaller hand built projects such as masks, busts and plant and animal forms will be covered, as per student interest. Students will be encouraged to plan out their projects through making quick sketches and a small maquette (drawing experience is not required). Each class incorporates demonstration and individual feedback and addresses the various skill levels and interests of all students. Weather proof surfaces such as oxide washes, colored slips, under glazes, terra sigilatta and sculptural glazes will also be covered.

All dates and fees are subject to change.

NOTE: Studio/course fees are non-refundable. Classes missed because of emergency may be applied to future course sessions. Make-up classes are not transferable and must be completed by the original student only.
